Behind every CO₂ number sits a factor.

Emission factors translate business activity — a litre of diesel, a euro of logistics spend, a kilo of steel — into the greenhouse-gas emissions behind it. The wrong factor distorts the whole footprint. With today.green you never have to guess which factor is the right one.

Not every factor carries the same weight.

The GHG Protocol distinguishes three quality tiers for emissions data. Which tier applies depends on what you have — invoices, meter readings or supplier data. We help you climb the ladder as your carbon maturity allows.

01

Fast, broad, rough

Uses monetary spend as a proxy. Suited for first inventories and Scope-3 categories where primary data is unrealistic. Fast across an entire P&L — but blind to the actual efficiency of individual suppliers.

€ 50,000 IT services
× 0.31 kg CO₂e/€
= 15,500 kg CO₂e
02

Physically measured, precise

Uses real consumption data — kilometres driven, kilowatt-hours burned, tonnes transported. Significantly more accurate than spend-based and the right standard for Scope 1, Scope 2 and most upstream logistics. The best choice for CSRD and VSME reporting.

24,000 km diesel van
× 0.192 kg CO₂e/km
= 4,608 kg CO₂e
03

Primary, auditable, decision-ready

Uses data from your actual supply chain — the supplier’s product footprint or verified LCA. The most accurate tier and the only one that captures real decarbonisation effort in the value chain — exactly what auditors look for in PCAF and CSRD reports.

3.2 t steel (supplier DE-04)
× 1.48 kg CO₂e/kg
= 4,736 kg CO₂e

Curated library, not a data dump.

We don’t advertise the size of our database — what matters to us is that the right factor meets the right activity in the right region. Our library draws on the official, peer-reviewed and sector-specific sources regulators actually accept.

National & regulatory

→ 12 sources

Government emission factors that cover national reporting regimes. The primary reference for Scope 1 and Scope 2 location-based calculations in every region.

UBA / Probas (DE) DEFRA (UK) ADEME Base Empreinte (FR) US EPA Eurostat IPCC AR6 IEA

Life cycle & product

→ 8 sources

Peer-reviewed LCA databases for upstream Scope 3, purchased goods and product footprints. Essential when material and process detail matters.

ecoinvent v3.11 Agribalyse EF 3.1 (EU) GaBi / Sphera USEEIO

Sector-specific

→ 14 sources

Industry-recognised factors for specialised activities — transport, steel, plastics, agriculture. Preferred whenever an industry has its own methodology.

HBEFA (Straßenverkehr) EcoTransIT (Logistik) worldsteel PlasticsEurope Cool Farm Tool PCAF (Finanzen)

Grid & energy

→ 6 sources

Regional grid-mix intensities, refreshed annually. Supports both location-based and market-based Scope-2 calculations with full dual reporting.

AIB Residual Mix IEA Länderfaktoren EPA eGRID Umweltbundesamt DE-Mix

Todd AI picks the right factor — every time.

The hardest part of carbon accounting isn’t the maths, it’s matching thousands of messy invoice lines to the correct emission factor. Todd, the AI inside our platform, does that for you — and every match is traceable back to its source.

Step 01
Capture

Invoices, fleet cards, energy receipts, supplier exports — flat files or live integrations.

Step 02
Classify

Every line is auto-tagged by activity type, region and GHG-Protocol scope.

Step 03
Match

The best available factor is picked, with the tier quality clearly flagged.

Step 04
Verify

Every calculation carries factor, source, vintage and method — audit-ready.

How we decide what counts.

Three principles behind our emission-factor library — from how we pick sources through to the unbroken traceability of every single number. So every footprint stays auditable instead of resting on a black box.

Official before proprietary

We default to government, peer-reviewed and standard-setting sources. Proprietary factors only enter the library where there is no public equivalent — and even then only with documented methodology.

Vintage matters

Every factor carries its publication year. Grid intensities and national inventories are refreshed annually, not when it happens to be convenient. Stale factors lead to creeping errors in multi-year reports.

Traceability as the default

Every emission number in today.green is one click from the underlying factor, source and methodology. Auditors, regulators and PE investors all ask the same thing: where does this number come from?

One library, every reporting duty.

GHG PROTOCOL Corporate Standard & Scope 3 Standard. Location- and market-based dual Scope-2 reporting out of the box.
CSRD / ESRS E1 Built for double materiality. Factors mapped to ESRS data points, with a full audit trail.
VSME Voluntary EFRAG SME standard. Pre-configured B-module data points for simplified voluntary disclosure.
SBTi Science-Based Targets validation. Baseline inventories that hold up to an SBTi submission.
CBAM Embedded-emissions reporting duty. Product factors aligned with the CBAM implementing regulation for importers.
SFDR / PCAF Financed emissions for investors. Asset-class methodology for private equity, listed equities and real estate.
